Firefighters Battle 6-Alarm Blaze in Breezy Point NY. At least 50 homes have been destroyed in the Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens, where firefighters battled a six-alarm fire early Tuesday.

Fire officials say the fire was reported at about 11 p.m. Monday and is located in a flooded Zone A area.

A fire department spokesman says nearly 200 firefighters were at the scene before 5 a.m. Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

New York faces the prospect of being without power for a week today after Superstorm Sandy caused mass blackouts and triggered a series of explosions.

In total, more than six million Americans across the Eastern Seaboard have been affected after the devastation wreaked by Superstorm Sandy caused power cuts on an unprecedented scale.

In New York City alone, more than 250,000 residents are without power after an explosion at a Manhattan power plant.
Around 50,000 power outages in downtown Manhattan in Battery Park and the Financial District were part of a planned cut and will take around three days to restore, but much of the damage was caused by the explosion at the 14th street power station and will take up to a week to repair.
A company statement said: ‘Con Edison is reporting power outages to a large section of Manhattan stretching from East 39th Street to the lower tip of Manhattan.
‘The outage was caused by flooding in company substations and engineers are working to correct the problem.
‘Restoring electrical service to underground equipment demands cleaning all components of sea water, drying and testing to make it safe to restore power.’
In addition to the flood waters, heavy winds have downed power lines across the region.

Il presidente americano, Barack Obama, ha dichiarato lo “stato di calamita’” per lo Stato di New York in seguito al passaggio della tempesta Sandy. Il provvedimento rendera’ possibile lo stanziamento di fondi per far fronte all’emergenza causata dai danni alle infrastrutture e dagli allagamenti.

Intanto in New Jersey il reattore 1 della centrale nucleare di Hancocks Bridge è stato fermato dopo che quattro delle sue sei pompe di raffreddamento hanno smesso di funzionare a causa dei danni provocati da passaggio dell’uragano Sandy.

L’acqua intanto sta scendendo a Lower Manhattan, sommersa ieri da una marea di oltre 4 metri provocata dall’uragano Sandy. Le notizie cattive sono tutte le altre: Sandy, anche se degradato a tempesta post-tropicale, rimane pericoloso per i 60 milioni di abitanti della costa est. I morti sono 16 negli Usa, oltre 6 milioni di persone sono senza corrente, la metro di New York è allagata, i treni e gli aerei fermi. E si prevede almeno una settimana per tornare alla normalita’.

 In questo inferno d’acqua, riescono pure a scoppiare gli incendi. A New York, nel Queens, in un rione allagato 15 edifici sono in fiamme. “Manhattan bassa è completamente coperta dall’acqua. Non esagero”, scrive su Twitter il direttore della Protezione civile di New York, Howard Glaser.

Metà dell’isola è al buio, 500.000 persone sono senza corrente nella Grande Mela. I telefoni intasati funzionano a singhiozzo. Sette tunnel della metro sono allagati. “La metropolitana di New York ha 108 anni – commenta sconvolto il direttore, Joseph Lhota – ma non ha mai visto una catastrofe cosi’ devastante”. Il sindaco Michael Bloomberg cerca di rassicurare, ma è ben conscio del disastro: “Il peggio del maltempo è andato – dice – e la città certamente sta sentendo l’impatto”. In città c’è stato un solo morto, un trentenne schiacciato da un albero nel Queens. I candidati presidenziali hanno cancellato diversi appuntamenti a causa dell’uragano.

Scenario spettrale a New York, dove al Battery Park l’acqua ha superato i quattro metri di altezza, battendo il record di un metro raggiunto dall’acqua a Mahattan durante il terribile uragano Donna nel 1960.

 ”Frankenstorm”, come e’ stato ribattezzato, ha prodotto il peggior blackout per New York dal 2003, quando l’intera citta’ rimase al buio. La tempesta ha toccato terra ad Atlantic City intorno alle 20 ora locale con venti di 130 chilometri orari e onde di quattro metri.

L’acqua e’ entrata anche a Wall Street dove ha raggiunto il livello di 3 metri. L’ordine di evacuazione ha riguardato oltre 400.000 persone a New York dove sono stati chiusi tutti gli aeroporti, compreso il megascalo JFK. L’ospedale della New York University, nell’area di lower Manhattan, ha avviato le procedure di evacuazione perche’ e’ saltato il generatore di corrente mentre 19 operai della Con Edison sono rimasti bloccati per tre ore in una centrale elettrica in seguito ad un’esplosione e sono stati tratti in salvo con i gommoni.
